Yesterday, Florida St. captured their regional title by clobbering Ohio St. 37-6. This is the most lopsided victory in the history of College Baseball and maybe of ANY baseball league. Seminole Freshman OF James Ramsey (Wesleyan School) went 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, a walk and scored twice. He tied a career high with 3 hits and tied another career high with 2 RBIs.
In the Atlanta Regional, GA. Tech lost to Southern Miss Saturday 10-7, putting them in the losers bracket. In that game, Chase Burnette (Buford HS) went 1-3 and scored twice. Tony Plagman (Wesleyan School) went 1-4 with 2 RBIs including a SAC fly, and Second Baseman Connor Winn, also from the Wesleyan School, went 0-2 and committed one of three Tech errors in the game.
However, in the elimination game against Elon Sunday Afternoon, thing s were much better for the Jackets as well as the Gwinnett players. Plagman went 2-4 with 1 RBI, and Chase Burnette struggled, going 0-4 but got an RBI by drawing a walk. The RBI was one of 6 runs plated by the Jackets in the second inning, which led to a 9-4 victory over the Elon Pheonix, sending them back to Burlington, NC.
That night, the Jackets faced Southern Miss with the daunting task of beating the Golden Eagles twice to advance to next week's Super Regional against the Florida Gators. Tony Plagman went 2-3 with a SAC fly and one RBI, and Burnette went 1-2 with a single to help GA. Tech beat the Golden Eagles 10-3 with the deciding Championship game coming Monday night.
However, three errors and five unearned runs would do in the Jackets as the Golden Eagles defeated Ga. Tech to take the Regional Title and move on to the Super Regionals against Florida at the Swamp next week. This is the first time in school history that Southern Miss has advanced to the Super Regionals. Southern Miss Freshman Shortstop B.A. Vollmuth belted 2 homers in the game to lead the boys from Hattiesburg, Miss. Southern Miss alum Brett Favre is happy tonight.
In that game, Chase Burnette struggled going 0-3, but Tony Plagman went 1-3 with 2 walks and scored twice. All in all, it was an excellent performance by the Gwinnett contingent throughout the tournament.
As for the Georgia Bulldogs, they were eliminated by Ohio St. 13-5, but Freshman Zach Cone (Parkview HS) did his best to keep the dogs in it. He went 4-5 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to lead Georgia. Also, Jr. Lefthander Justin Earls (Collins Hill HS) pitched 2.2 innings in relief and only allowed 1 run.
For Ga. Tech, Ga. State, Alabama, Georgia, Ga. Southern, and Vanderbilt, along with their Gwinnett players, they'll half to wait till next year. However, for James Ramsey and Parker Brunelle of Florida St., both alums of the Wesleyan School, their dream of Omaha continues next week as they take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in next week's Super Regional. By the way, the overall batting average. The Gwinnett players who had at bats in the NCAA tournament so far combined to go 22-59. That's a batting average of .373. Congratulations Gwinnett players for representing College Baseball so well in the NCAA Tournament.
